American Red Cross Disaster Public Affairs Training & Operations Specialist in Washington, District Of Columbia

Job Description:

PLEASE NOTE:This position will work in both the DC and Fairfax offices of the American Red Cross. Ideal candidate will be located in the DC Metro area OR be able to relocate to the area on their own and will be comfortable commuting into these office locations.

This full-time position serves as a key member of the American Red Cross National Communications Department. Reporting to the Director, Disaster Public Affairs, this position provides strategic support for Red Cross disaster public affairs efforts and works collaboratively with media relations and social media colleagues to elevate the visibility of the organization during disasters. This position is also responsible for building public affairs capacity by creating, supporting and administering training programs.

Responsibilities:

Implement the strategic priorities for Red Cross Disaster Public Affairs efforts and support Red Cross Disaster Cycle Services and Communication Departments. This will be accomplished when you:• Support the building of Disaster Public Affairs capacity across the Red Cross corporate and chapter network. • Support long-term and short-term chapter training priorities, including the development of courses and coordinating monthly online training events. Support the development and execution of the annual training (APAT) conference. • Provide assistance and direction to deployed field staff, recruiting and training volunteer and paid communicators. • Responsible for supporting the recruitment, deployment, and support of field communicators, and close work with staff in the national Disaster Operations Coordination Center and disaster field staff. • Collaborate with other communication teams and departments to elevate Red Cross visibility during disasters. • Build relationships with Red Cross chapter communicators to better disseminate information and enhance collaboration during disasters. • Support corporate social media efforts by monitoring social sites and online trends, creating content and engaging with online communities. • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Four-year college degree (or equivalent experience) • 5 years' experience in operational support for communications, journalism, marketing, public affairs or public relations. • Exceptional writing and editing skills are a must. • This position is not media facing, but experience with media is helpful in training those who will be media-facing. • Applicant must have a keen attention to detail, superior multi-tasking abilities, strong organization and problem-solving skills, demonstrated project management ability, the ability to quickly and successfully respond to changing demands and priorities, and demonstrated experience in a fast-paced environment. Ability to work in high-pressure situations is essential. • Ability to work irregular or extended hours, including weekends and evenings, on a routine basis during disasters and other emergencies is required. • Knowledge of social media and proficiency in Spanish are a plus. • Familiarity with and a commitment to the Red Cross mission.• Experience working with or being a volunteer.
