Directing the overall operation and administration of the laboratory, including the employment of personnel who are competent to perform test procedures, record and report test results promptly, accurately and proficiently, and assure compliance with ASHI regulations. Ensure that testing systems developed and used for each of the tests performed in the laboratory provide quality laboratory services for all aspects of test performance, which includes the pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases of testing. Designs and develops research work done in the HLA Laboratory in order to make productive advances in the fields of Immunogenetics and/or Histocompatibility, which are consistent with the overall goals of the American Red Cross Blood Services.
Ensure high quality clinical lab test results required for patient care with established turn-around-time. Review clinical test reports and be available on-site, or via telephone and electronic communication for consultation and to resolve difficult or unusual clinical testing problems at any time from either the transplantation communities or from in house staff or colleagues.
Keeps abreast with the development of the HLA fields by keeping up with journals and participating in International Workshops. Develops and implements the most advanced test procedures in the lab after the proper stringent validation procedures have been met.
Organize and direct special projects to evaluate, improve and/or develop new test procedures, techniques and reagents, some of which may be offered as clinical services. Collects and analyzes data, interprets results and adjusts course of project as necessary.
Ensure that the technical staff participates in continuing education relevant to histocompatibility and/or immunogenetics testing at least to the level of the minimum requirements outlined by the ASHI Accreditation Review Board. Acts as a resource in the field to staff members and area hospitals and participates in HLA workshops.
Participates in meetings and seminars to present own work and discuss research of others.
Ensures that customer satisfaction is given top priority at all times.
Seeks new accounts, contracts and services to ensure the continued success of the laboratory.
Requires a M.D. or Ph.D. degree. This position requires applicants with an extensive scientific HLA knowledge and in- depth hands on experiences in operating a high volume clinical HLA testing laboratory. Applicants must also possess state-of-the-art working knowledge and technical skills in the following areas: HLA serology and molecular genetics; platelet serology; HLA antibody screening /identification of HLA antibody specificity; cross matching techniques, to support stem cell, solid organ transplantation programs and platelet transfusion therapy etc; and other areas in the field of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics.
Requires minimally 6 years of hands-on experiences in all phases of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics field. Must be certified by ASHI as a qualified Director or be eligible for certification.
Requires demonstrated written and verbal communications skills.
