We are currently accepting applications for a Scientific Support Associate to work on blood donor studies for the American Red Cross Biomedical Services division. In this role you will serve as a technical consultant and subject matter expert on clinical/scientific data management, interpretation, and quality. Position requires high attention to detail, advanced Excel knowledge, outstanding communication skills and customer service orientation.
Work schedule will be Monday-Friday 1st shift at our Gaithersburg, MD Scientific Support Office (SSO) location plus periodic weekend rotation for monitoring emails from home. Our on-the-job, progressive training is extensive and will last up to 6 months to ensure that you are fully comfortable & competent in applicable American Red Cross processes/procedures. After mastering internal donor studies you may also be assigned to work on external vendor studies. Scope varies by study, selected candidate should be comfortable working independently and working in a small-group team setting.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Receives, reviews and processes scientific data from study groups and outside investigators. Coordinates data preparation activities. Uses computer systems to correct, update, and retrieve data.
Design experimental protocols and oversees clinical/scientific studies that have been determined to satisfy a medical need or offer increased patient safety. Serve as technical consultant to clinical monitoring or research project teams and government regulatory agencies. Monitors and interprets results of clinical investigations in preparation for new drug or device application.
Monitors the collection of research data in preparation of policy decisions, submissions to regulatory agencies and peer review publications. Ensures maintenance and reporting of data as required to be compliant with clinical/scientific protocols. Reviews and analyze clinical/scientific databases for the extraction of data and integrates data to ensure the create of a unified database consistence with the aims and purposes of clinical/scientific protocols.
Create databases to maintain listings, tabulations, and graphical summaries for formal statistical estimates and tests. Assess quality of data analysis, and provide automated analysis tools where appropriate.
Oversees pre-clinical and clinical operations for data collection and execution and compliance to clinical/scientific protocols. Develops the infrastructure to support advanced clinical trials, sets strategy for process with full responsibility for data integrity and quality.
Education: 4-year college degree in Biology, Immunology, Microbiology or related scientific field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. RN candidates welcome.
Experience: Minimum 1 to 3 years related experience required. Advanced Excel skills essential to success in this role (ex. doing regressions, creating pivot tables, writing macros).
Essential Functions/Physical Requirements: Depending on work assignment, may require ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; or the ability to stand, walk and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of up to 20 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read technical information. Overall mobility is essential. May include sitting for long periods of time, driving a vehicle and working under challenging conditions.
Work Conditions: Work is performed indoors with some potential for exposure to safety and health hazards related to emergency services relief work. May travel and participate in meetings and conferences throughout chapter jurisdiction, state and Red Cross system. Because the Red Cross is a disaster response organization, staff may be asked to be on 24-hour call during period of major disaster.
